This STEM & Sustainability Week, we're celebrating the curious minds that make our school community so special. Explore portraits of pupils and staff who inspire discovery, creativity, and a love of science.

Atomic Magazine Ayah & Harvey (Year 13)

Leading and running Atomic magazine for the past year has been a great privilege for both of us. It has been amazing organising publications, exploring topics of interest, and just making science more accessible via the Atomic website. We’re incredibly grateful to everyone who contributed their time, ideas, and energy to each unique article to make Atomic a true collective effort.

Beyond the Beaker Podcast  Johnny & Ben (Year 11)

Starting the          Beyond the Beaker          podcast has been an incredible experience. The support we have received from teachers and other pupils, as well as the hugely exciting opportunity to practice talking about science, have contributed to making this really enjoyable. It was amazing to see how many people had listened to the podcast and seemed genuinely positive about it, and the suggestions for names and content made it feel like we had succeeded in making this something engaging to listen to. Hopefully, we can continue to improve and make better and better content over the next couple of years, with the aim of talking to some famous scientists. Throughout the whole process of starting this, we have received incredible support from Mr Dickinson, and none of this would have happened without him.

Thank Science It's Saturday  Mateo (Year 13) & Naomi (Year 11)

Leading Thank Science It's Saturday (TSIS) has been a rewarding and enjoyable experience from its starting point        at the beginning of the academic year. A personal favourite is always the audience interaction during each talk. The atmosphere feels very relaxed, yet inquisitive, and leads to some very interesting (albeit overly technical at times) debates. One of my favourite talks was from Danny, Second Year Specialist (Year 13), on CRISPR technology and CAS9. He managed to digest what is normally a very complex topic and explain it both incredibly well and concisely. I also enjoyed Naomi's, Fifth Form (Year 11), talk on the chemistry behind macaroons, and I feel like it perfectly showcases the other side of TSIS, being fun, yet still interesting, and that curiosity-driven presentations thrive just as much as those with countless hours spent researching PhD papers.

Thank Science It's Saturday has been amazing, allowing personal passion to shine through, which usually makes for the best talks, regardless of the subject matter.

Science Technician Chemistry  Michael Isaacs

I have a geochemistry analytical background in university research roles, working in the UK, Spain, Canada, and the Caribbean. My role at Charterhouse is to support practical science teaching as a member of the chemistry technical team. We prepare all the class practicals and teacher demonstrations required for both GCSE and A Level, as well as many outreach events such as lectures and competitions, engaging with local schools. I have worked at Charterhouse for over 15 years and particularly enjoy the daily challenge of preparing practicals correctly and ensuring they are delivered on time, alongside coordinating all the daily planning with a wonderful group of colleagues.

Design Engineering Technician  Mike Mellor

Before joining Charterhouse in 2023, I spent 20 years with a major IT manufacturer, beginning my career as a Field Engineer and progressing to Senior UK Pre‑Sales Consultant. I later moved into the education sector as a second career, initially working in IT and then transitioning into audiovisual roles. After a short career break, I chose to pursue a more creative and hands‑on path, which led me to Design Technology workshops.

In Design Engineering at Charterhouse, my role covers a wide range of technical and practical responsibilities, including CAD/CAM, robotics, electronics, vehicle maintenance, and ensuring the safety of all workshop users. I enjoy passing on my knowledge and experience to the pupils and helping them with problem-solving. No two days are the same, and the environment is always challenging with new ideas, materials, and processes.

Outside of work, I am a licensed Amateur Radio operator, and I’m currently installing home‑automation solutions in my house.
